VOLTA Performing Arts is a new dance studio in the Logan Square neighborhood for those seeking proper dance technique education, creative self-expression, exercise and social opportunities though dance.



 

VOLTA Performing Arts provides a dance education that reaches far beyond execution of steps. We engage student’s critical thinking in order to develop a deeper sense of self-awareness. Science integration is vital to our curriculum as dance is the study of the body in motion. VOLTA is enables students to capture their full potential as dancers and people in a safe, caring and respectful environment.

Class Descriptions and Tuition Rates

Big & Little 

This 30-minute class is designed as an introduction to movement exploration, working
together, and following directions. This class is geared for students ages 2 - 3 with their
parent, and uses props, games, and sing-along songs allowing each parent to help their
child develop motor and coordination skills in a fun, structured environment. This class
emphasizes how to work together and following directions through creative play.
Parents, relatives and nannies are more than welcome in this class. Please only one adult
per student per week over the age of 18. Please wear comfortable clothes to move, play
and dance in. Bare feet or ballet slippers only, please no socks.

Me, Myself & I 

Me, Myself, and I is an introduction to classical ballet using creative, imaginative
role-playing and fun props. This class may involve pretending to be animals, playing
instruments to learn rhythm, learning balancing, skipping and running along with
techniques using costumes and ribbons to develop their hand-eye coordination. This
class is suitable for all dancers who are having so much fun that they don't even realize
that they are learning the fundamentals of ballet technique along the way.

Creative Dance 1

The course objective is to develop a basic understanding of locomotor movements.
Introduction to movement and development of musical awareness. Development of
creative expression. Diagonal movements across the floor – stressing correct alignment
of the body.

The course objective is to continue development of locomotor movements. Building on
musical awareness and creative expression. Introduction to the basic positions and

Ballet 1

The course objective is to develop a basic understanding of the following ballet
preparatory work. Posture and alignment, balance point as related to basic positions.
Leg rotation in the hip socket, contribution of the joints in movement. Weight
transference. Circular patterns in basic movement and coordination of body and arms.
Basic body and head positions, as well as additional fundamental barre exercises.
Understanding the seven movements of dance. Continued development of combination
center work.

**Please note that this class meets twice a week**

Meet Our Award Winning Teachers

Deborah “Miss Dee” Byczkowski  is a Chicago native Dance Teaching Artist who got her start studying the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus. She graduated with a BFA in Dance Pedagogy from Columbia College Chicago where she had the opportunity to assistant teach under Sarah Schafer and Margi Cole. She has worked as a Dance Teaching Artist for The Chicago Ballet Center, Momentum Performing Arts, Chicago Public Schools City Dance Program, Center for Community and Arts Partnership, River North Dance Chicago and Forward Momentum Chicago, exploring the language of dance through scientific exploration. She is certified to teach the American Academy of Ballet syllabus and is also currently undergoing training to become certified as an RPM Master Teacher. She has performed in works by Jennifer Archibald, Michel Rodriguez, Taisha Pagget, Trae Turner, Laboratory Dancers, Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre, ISH (Chicago residency), and has been a company member with Reveries in Motion Inc. for their last two seasons. Last year she performed as a dancer and co-director for The Dancer’s Cooperative. This is Deborah’s first studio and she is excited to be bringing the Art and Science of Dance to her neighborhood of Logan Square.

Elijah“Mr. Eli” Motley started his dance career at Old Dominion University while earning a degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering where he performed for the University Theatre.  He studied House Dance, Break dancing, Popping, and Krump with Baila Fusion Dance Company in Virginia Beach for two seasons.  In 2016, he studied contemporary modern dance with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company in Israel and Gaga under Ohad Naharin and select Batsheva Ensemble in 2017.  Today, he is in his third season as a company dancer for Chicago Dance Crash while also performing and choreographing as a freelance artist in Chicago.  Elijah recently completed his yoga teacher training at Zen Yoga Garage.  In 2018, he was chosen to be a Resident Artist at VOLTA Performing Arts where through movement exploration and making dance connections he co-founded Concepts Dance.
